The schools agree on the principle; the split is over the slaughterer's tasmiyah

The food of the People of the Book is lawful in principle under Quran 5:5, and the sources report broad agreement that a Jew's or Christian's slaughtered animal is halal as such; the dispute concerns the slaughterer's mentioning Allah's name. The Hanafis and Hanbalis make the tasmiyah a condition, so deliberate omission makes the meat haram, while the Shafi'is treat it as a sunnah and not a condition. The Malikis hold it lawful and speak instead of karaha in certain cases.
