The schools differ on which of qiran, tamattu' and ifrad is most virtuous in Hajj
The four schools disagree over the ranking of the three rites: the Hanafis place qiran first, then tamattu', then ifrad, while the Malikis and Shafi'is place ifrad first and the Hanbalis place tamattu' first. Hanafi muftis have often directed the pilgrim who reaches Makkah well before the Hajj days to tamattu', because qiran would require staying in ihram for weeks or slipping into tamattu'. Recent fatwas set out the positions, and some stress that the disagreement concerns virtue, not permissibility.Shamela+7
What the Quran says
Al-Baqarah 2:196 legislates the tamattu' sacrifice and then restricts it to those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. The neighbouring verse 2:197 fixes the well-known months of Hajj, and 2:158 ties sa'y to both Hajj and 'umrah, which matters for the qarin's tawaf and sa'y. Ibn Rushd records that the scholars agreed the tamattu' meant in this verse is entering ihram for 'umrah in the months of Hajj from the miqat, completing it, then entering ihram for Hajj in the same year.Quran.com+3
Malik, as al-Marghinani reports him in al-Hidaya, preferred tamattu' over qiran on the ground that tamattu' is mentioned in the Quran while qiran is not. The Hanafis turned to the verse's closing clause to deny tamattu' and qiran to the people of Makkah and to anyone residing inside the miqats, so that the ranking question applies only to the outsider. Al-Albani read that same clause in the opposite direction, arguing that ifrad is the rite of the people of the Haram.Shamela+2
Ibn 'Abidin passes on a practical reading of the months: whoever enters Makkah in ihram for 'umrah before the months of Hajj begin, and wants to be a mutamatti', should hold back from tawaf until the months enter, because once he makes tawaf the 'umrah is concluded and he no longer counts as a mutamatti'. Al-'Uthaymeen drew from the preposition "ila" that a time gap must exist between the 'umrah and the Hajj, so one who reaches the miqat on the 8th has no room for tamattu' and should intend qiran or ifrad.Shamela+2

Al-FatawaRuling on Tamattu' in Hajj for One Who Arrives on the Eighth Day
Al-FatawaWhat is the sufficient time for tamattu'? Sometimes we exit our ihram on the morning of the eighth day, then we enter ihram for Hajj on the same day.
What the hadith show
The Prophet ordered the Companions who had entered ihram for Hajj to make it an 'umrah, saying, "Were it not for the sacrificial animals I have with me, I would have done as you are doing" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2994, graded sahih by Abu Ghuddah and al-Albani). In 'A'ishah's report, had he known in advance what he learned later, he would not have brought the hady and would have left ihram with those who did (Sunan Abi Dawud 1784, sahih per al-Albani). Ibn 'Abbas reported, "The 'umrah has entered into the Hajj until the Day of Resurrection" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 932, hasan, and later graders call it sahih; Sunan Ibn Majah 2977, sahih per al-Albani).Sunnah.com+3
Anas heard the talbiyah for both together: "Labbayk 'umratan wa hajjan" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2729, sahih; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 821, hasan sahih). Ibn 'Abbas ordered tamattu' and specified the hady as a camel, cow, sheep, or a share in a blood-offering (Sahih al-Bukhari 1688). Jabir reported that the Prophet and his Companions entered ihram for Hajj, and only he and Talha had a sacrificial animal with them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1785), and 'A'ishah reported, "Whoever has a sacrificial animal with him should enter ihram for Hajj and 'umrah together and not leave ihram until he completes both" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1638).Sunnah.com+5
Jabir reported the Prophet combined Hajj and 'umrah and made one tawaf for both (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 947, hasan, and the view of al-Shafi'i, Ahmad and Ishaq). On the other side, 'Umar said, "I know that the Prophet did it, and so did his Companions, but I disliked that they should spend the night with their wives and then set out for Hajj" (Sahih Muslim 1222), and Jabir said, "We did both with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then 'Umar forbade us from both, so we did not return to them" (Sahih Muslim 1405e).Sunnah.com+3
'Uthman forbade combining, and 'Ali pronounced the talbiyah for both in front of him, saying he would not abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ for anyone (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2723, sahih). Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas rebuked al-Dahhak ibn Qays for saying only an ignorant person does tamattu', citing the Prophet's practice; the report comes through Malik, and its grading varies: da'if isnad per Ahmad Shakir, sahih isnad per al-Albani, hasan isnad per Zubair Ali Zai (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 823; Muwatta Malik 766). Ibn 'Umar performed qiran and said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it" (Sunan Ibn Majah 2974, sahih per al-Albani), and the Prophet said, "Perform Hajj and 'umrah in succession, for they expel poverty and sins" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2631, hasan sahih).Sunnah.com+4

How the four schools rule
The Hanafis rank qiran first, then tamattu', then ifrad: al-Hidaya states qiran is better than tamattu' and ifrad, al-Hidaya again states tamattu' is better than ifrad "according to us", and Bada'i' al-Sana'i' gives the same order as the manifest narration. A narration from Abu Hanifa himself puts ifrad above tamattu', and Ibn 'Abidin reports al-'Imadi choosing tamattu' in his mansak as better than ifrad and easier than qiran.Shamela+3
The Malikis rank ifrad first, then qiran, then tamattu': al-Dasuqi's hashiyah on al-Sharh al-Kabir places qiran after ifrad in desirability, then tamattu', and Ibn Rushd reports that Malik chose ifrad, relying on 'A'ishah's report that the Prophet entered ihram for Hajj. The Shafi'is rank ifrad first, then tamattu', then qiran: Rawdat al-Talibin states this as the madhhab and the position in most of his books, and Mughni al-Muhtaj repeats it, adding that ifrad is best only if he performs an 'umrah in the same year; if he postpones the 'umrah, ifrad is inferior, because postponing it is disliked.Shamela+3
The Hanbalis rank tamattu' first, then qiran, then ifrad: al-Mughni reports tamattu' is Ahmad's choice, and the argument is that it joins Hajj and 'umrah with complete acts and added sacrifice, and al-Rawd al-Murbi' grounds it in the Prophet's command to the Companions and his regret at not joining them. A narration from Ahmad holds that if he brings the hady, qiran is better; if not, tamattu' is better.Shamela+1
Two Hanafi details bear directly on the early arriver. Qiran in the Hanafi books is formed either by entering ihram for both from the miqat or by entering ihram for 'umrah and then adding Hajj before four circuits of the 'umrah tawaf. And the Hanafi qarin, unlike the position of the majority, owes two tawafs and two sa'ys, as Ibn Rushd attributes to Abu Hanifa, al-Thawri and al-Awza'i.Shamela+2

How scholars reconciled the evidence
The root of the whole dispute, as Ibn Rushd puts it, is that the Prophet's own ihram is reported three ways: as ifrad, as tamattu', and as qiran. Al-Shirazi, in Mughni al-Muhtaj, offers the reconciliation the Shafi'is settled on: the Prophet entered ihram for Hajj and then brought 'umrah into it, that this was permitted for him specially that year, and that reports of ifrad describe the beginning of his ihram while reports of qiran describe its end, with reports of "tamattu'" meaning the linguistic enjoyment of the interval. Ibn al-Qayyim, as quoted by al-Albani, proposed two routes for the clash between 'A'ishah's report and Jabir's: either the one who affirms takes precedence over the one who denies, or Jabir meant something narrower than what 'A'ishah affirmed.Shamela+2
The second conflict is command versus practice: he ordered tamattu' but kept his own ihram because of the hady. Ahmad's rule resolves it by the presence of the sacrificial animal, qiran when it is brought and tamattu' when it is not, and al-'Uthaymeen states the same ranking with the same exception. Al-Albani rejects that reconciliation and holds tamattu' best in every case.Shamela+4
The third is 'Umar's prohibition against the standing Sunnah. His own words in Sahih Muslim show he knew the Prophet and the Companions had done it, and that his motive was a concern about the pilgrims' conduct and about keeping the House frequented; one summary of the reports concludes his prohibition was a choice of what he judged better for the community, not a declaration that tamattu' was unlawful. Ibn 'Abbas's retort, that he was quoting the Messenger while they quoted Abu Bakr and 'Umar, is the counterweight on the other side.Sunnah.com+3
The fourth is the argument from the Quran's silence. Against Malik's point that qiran has no mention in the verse, al-Marghinani answers that qiran joins two acts of worship, like fasting with i'tikaf, and that the extras claimed for ifrad (extra talbiyah, travel, shaving) do not establish superiority, since talbiyah is not bounded, travel is not the goal, and shaving is an exit from worship.Shamela

What recent fatwas say
Egypt's Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah sets out all three positions without choosing for the questioner: the Hanafis on qiran then tamattu' then ifrad, the Malikis and Shafi'is on ifrad first, with the Malikis placing qiran second and the Shafi'is, in the relied-upon view, placing tamattu' second, and the Hanbalis on tamattu' first. Darul Iftaa Chicago, answering a Hanafi who reaches Makkah on the 7th of Dhul Hijjah, advises qiran precisely because the gap between the 'umrah and the Hajj would be minimal, and notes that the intention may still be settled until four circuits of tawaf are completed. A 2024 Hanafi fatwa on FatwaCentre states that in the madhhab qiran is more virtuous whether or not one has performed 'umrah that year, and explains that Imam Muhammad's preference for two separate journeys is a narrower case, not a departure from the madhhab, and Askimam, also Hanafi, treats tamattu' as the norm for the outside pilgrim and advises going to Madinah before Makkah where possible.Dar al-Ifta (Egypt)+3
On the other side, Ibn Baz calls tamattu' best and the rite the Prophet commanded for those arriving after Ramadan; al-'Uthaymeen gives tamattu', then qiran, then ifrad, with qiran ahead when the hady is brought; al-Albani holds tamattu' best without hesitation; and Islamweb likewise advises tamattu', while IslamOnline stresses that all three are valid and that the schools' disagreement concerns virtue, not permissibility.Al-Fatawa+7
For the Hanafi who arrives before the Hajj days, the practical hinge is the calendar. If he arrives after Shawwal begins, tamattu' is open to him: 'umrah on arrival, out of ihram, then ihram for Hajj on the 8th, with a hady or, if he cannot afford one, three days of fasting during Hajj and seven after returning. If he wants the Hanafi-preferred qiran, he must either enter ihram for both at the miqat and remain so for the whole wait, or add the Hajj before finishing four circuits of the 'umrah tawaf, after which he owes two tawafs, two sa'ys and the hady in the Hanafi reckoning. If he arrives before the months of Hajj altogether, Ibn 'Abidin's report indicates that an 'umrah performed and concluded before those months does not make him a mutamatti', leaving ifrad or qiran.Quran.com+4
